2020 is a pivotal year from any angle. The whole world watches in wrapped trepidation as the “leader of the free world” slides ever closer to authoritarianism. Then just with the approach of the election that will determine the fate of democracy in our age, the COVID pandemic sweeps across the globe, exacerbated in the US by that same tilt. Not since the world wars has the human psyche been in such turmoil. It was on that stage that we three Jungian artists, Skip Connover, Coeleen Kiebert and myself, launched the Participation Mystique Project to try to take the temperature of humanity by sampling the collective unconscious of willing participants. We request interested individuals to submit “doodles” that then the group would study for clues to the movement of the collective psyche before and after this pivotal election, which is nothing less than a turning point in human history. As a lifelong artist consumed with the human story, I approach the possibilities with a mix of worry and hope. We carve our own future. May we be blessed with more wisdom than we appear to possess!
