It is interesting to me – the original Nine of Pentacles is rather sedate – which I would expect it to be. The Land of Mystereum Nine of Pentacles, which is a “gentled down” version, almost looks sinister to me! π

The Queen of Pentacles loves this! Especially the connection with the Kng of Wands! I love what you said her about enjoying the world on whatever scale we see it at. Life is not stagnant – it is moving, reshaping, morphing all the time – we see what we want to see, we see what we are expecting to see, and then … if we are lucky, and we are blessed, we see a glimmer of the big picture!
Wow! Where to start! I loved the literal relationship (sister, brother) between the cards, the thought that each card shares its gifts on the journey of life with the other cards, and the tempering aspects of a well honed sword/Sword.
Jordan! Wow ! I really enjoyed reading this and want to see more! That’s what I love about tarot.. the story..the way it transports me somewhere else so I can have an otherworldly view of life. You fed right into my passion.

Into writing short books are we? π I love that none of us are getting out of this alive! π There is a difference between the unknown, and “not knowing”, and there is a lot of that which occurs naturally in life.
BTW – It will be interesting to see how people go through this post and “pick paragraphs” for perusal and digestion. Things will be missed, or not seen in depth, IMHO, for those who do this.
Death and not-knowing to me is more like a six lane highway, with lots of hectic movement in all directions. I think I am looking at/feeling multiple universes here – different levels on the same timeline, as well as the past/future aspects of each timeline.
I do agree that our imagination is the basis or our survival system. I also agree t hat failure is a huge part of our learning experience. I feel that the evolving of the Mystereum Tarot into Tarot In The Land Of Mysteruem was/is a natural progression. Taking it out for a test drive, using it in some very important ways. Not so much a balancing act as evolving it, moving it forward.
BTW – IMHO, good stories do have a tendency to meander. π
Can’t say that I agree with you about channeling. I do get out of my own way to bring things through in a reading, in journey work and in visualisation. Go more intensely into the now is a completely different thing.
It is not unusual for you to be thinking more about death now that the Mystereum Tarot is a living being. It has come to completion, and you need to experience its death (in its current form), and move forward with the next phase.

I appreciate your point and disagreement on channelling a great deal, and think there are different experiences of it. Mine stems most probably from my Mercury and Neptune being 4 degrees from one another exalted way deep into Scorpio. . .a foot on both sides kinda thing where to me psychic contents are pretty much like looking at art in a museum. They have always been a very present and actually mundane and normal part of my creativity. Like one hand IS a muse, in the other a pencil so to speak. I totally agree – there are different types of channeling. I love the museum analogy! I do love the way you separate cards with the “window” of the card back! So elegant! It took me a long time to not fuss when Judgment hit one of my readings. When you look at where it is in the cycle, it is where it “needs” to be.

This is a very deep thought, the prescient painting. Whenever imagery repeats itself like this, there is a reason. In each of these time periods, something was kicked in that was/is connected tot he other time periods. IMHO, anyway. π
The energy moving into wand at this point in time is necessary. It as come to a point where is can now be used to activate other things in your life.
You are right on the money, gloriously with no need of humility, Bonnie! What has kicked in is an absolute celebration and reverence for my multiple so-close-to mountain experiences AND a dispensation with the residual hangers on of rationing and going without just to make it through the experience. Time to treat those like a dog swimming, and shake off, tail UP and trot away from them. I served myself well to live through those experiences. The memories served me well to express the power of life, of my life, the power of presence in experience. But, their directly present time has passed, and that is what my noticing of the pattern is indicating to me. . .that art talisman tokens as trailheads of my experience resurged forth graciously to simply step into view to marshall forces. Three, the number of the first shape, the triangle the smallest module of a potential structure. Three stand for me to flex my temples in a far-seeing smile knowing indomitable spirit, and now more feeling an Emperor step by step where I am realigning my pace and direction. . .step by step. . . realigning the whole system in a sungle step. . .step by step.
I thought I was through those experiences, and recently I began to feel a bit too dead-man’s eyes about them. . .like I was in the wrong gear with them. And, I now feel I anesthetized parts of me to get all of me through them. Perennials and gardening and Death and Master Gardener. . .I have been poking up my perennial nose in my garden it seems. Rise and Shine Me! π
I agree! Shake off the residue from those experiences, and use the wisdom to do far greater things. You are on track and movin’ fast, my friend!

One of the things t hat resonated with me here was the Queen of Wands seeing through the mirage of her blind spots, then forgetting (consciously, although I am adding that word) what she saw, while remembering the clarity of her vision.

Thanks for the shout-out! And you got it, bull’s-eye, the reason why I included the Balbi Page of Swords in the illustrations to that article, even though nowhere did I directly state why. There he stands on his dramatic red and black checkerboard, which is imposed on the gently rolling landscape with artificial precision. The figure he cuts is all graceful curves and flashing colors, and he seems to be dowsing with his sword on the chessboard grid. I have always loved this card for the way the “Pythagorean” curves and colors contrast with the “Aristotelian” flooring. We need the one to set off the other.
This principle is actually operative right through to our inner senses. I’ve learned the hard way that when a person’s inner gyroscope is weak (inner-ear issues), the eyes overwork, trying to make up for that by seizing onto the verticals and horizontals of the landscape to steady one’s balance. My astigmatic self used to think “I don’t like all these 90-degree angles that civilization produces everywhere.” It’s true — from our architecture through car and clothing design to the standard shapes of our reading and computing surfaces, so much in our culture is cubic, far beyond the demands of efficiency or convention. But now I understand — the curves and colors of the Pythagorean world define beauty for the high-performing sensory net, but the nervous system defaults back to black-and-white Aristotelian logic when depth perception fails. Just so in society — if we cannot produce leadership of and by Philosophers, then we have to default back to being a nation of laws.
Keep it coming! I believe that the future of Tarot is it’s deep dark past. The more work we do “cleaning out the closets” so to speak, the more treasures we’ll unearth about this wonder-tool we all love so much.
Bull’s–eye is acceptable. ;-D I love the literal visual of your astigmatism example. My similar vein of experience comes from having 20:20 vision in my weak eye and 20:15 vision in the other. And, fluidity of clear sight in motion whether eyes open or closed, off-the-cuff or planned. . .but, i remember back, decades ago when for years I trained in the martial arts. Remembering back to the first month or two, the first days, and forms. . .step 1, 2, DANGIT what’s 3?! And, I smile as like water dripping on a rock, over and over across time the 1, 2, 3 was beautifully lost in the effortlessnes of motion like dominoes set up and staccatto-clicking at speed moving through their falling down. Fractals in motion, always perceiving the angles of curves, the generative formulas and lines constructing ellipses, or a simple flowing curve splined in tangent to flow into the next line, curve, square, shape, or simply its next place. As I read I was not looking for direct expressions of that Ace of Swords dowsing on the checkerboard, but was feeling its identity flow through the entirety of your article. . .where what was left unsaid was as generative as what you did say. Feels to me to be the natural way, though in Philo classes and such the dead-end of one or the other often boringly takes precedence, and many do not take that whole world of an Aristotelian expression and a Pythagorean one to “1, 2, DANGIT what’s 3?!” and take their thoughts creatively and lifefully forward from the forms of basic beginnings. . .like The Hermit sensing, about to see his own footsteps, his own footsteps as he completes a circle in a familiar place about to be experienced differently. . .presaging, prefiguring The Wheel of what is then “1, 2, 3, DANGIT”. Over and over through life, and it rarely becomes boring. And, more so the continual mastery, Aristotelian-Pythagorean antinomy in each motion, leads to further discovery.

Interesting that you picked up on my statement. I was just thinking out loud, because I am not sure jus “how” disruptive thislunar eclipse is going to be, but I do have a feeling that quite a shake up is in order. Eclipses of all kinds make us step back and look at things, and a total eclipse in the sign of Sagittarius (the wanderer witht he very questioning mind) begs to bepaid attention to. Can we thank the heavens that the Rapture was not “scheduled’ for this time period?!!
I feel that in looking at the role the “Mystereum Tarot” played/is playing in your life, it is a compendium of your experiences, while at the same time “being” a learning experience. Cool that you brought the Empress into the mix, because while the eclipse rides on the tails of the Sun and the Moon, we are seeing/experiencing it fromt he perspective of soeone on the Earth. The World, of course, is actually where all of this happens. (We won’t get into parallel worlds for now!)
Too bad that we won’t see the eclipse here in the U.S.!
I like t he Pallas Athena reference. When I first entered the service, and t he Women’s Army Corp was separate from the men’s army (this changed while I was in basic training), Pallas Athena was our “representative”, or symbol. Great poem!

As someone with 3 planets + Chiron in Pisces in the 11th house and my north node in the 12th house, I understand all too well this swimming Neptunian boundarylessness… I like the image of the sponge, it works for me. I find that I draw on the Jupiterian side of me to counterbalance the excess of Neptune: wisdom, learning, gravitas, and the Martial to help with the boundaries and some sparks of energy. But I also see those Neptunian elements as useful – I get instant feedback from a querent, I ‘know’ if and how what I’m saying is touching them, so I can adapt, repeat, or move on.

I hear you about different perspectives, Jordan. Each card has many voices. Repeating cards is something I’m thinking about a lot lately. In the solar return reading I did for myself on my birthday earlier in January, Temperance showed up three times! “How is this even possible?” I hear you asking. I did a 12 Houses spread and used three cards from three different decks to give a fuller picture of the energy of each house. In my reading, the Temperance card first shows up in the central theme position in the 1st House. In the 3rd House it shows up as the ‘shadow’ and in the 4th House it shows up in the spiritual guidance position. Talk about food for thought! This is one of the reasons I love doing multiple deck readings – Allowing for repetition this way provides the Universe to ‘flag’ development themes and makes dig deeper for meaning.
This happens often enough to pay attention to! π It gives weight to the Seeker’s question, but the reader needs to also look at what place the card(s) have in their life.
and as well, I really resonate with your “look at what place the card(s) have in their life.” Questions that come to mind are:
~ Describe the movement of the card into and through different areas of your life?
~ Do the cards live in that area for now? Do they cycle around? . . . like the moon and sun to the earth?
~ How are the cards or card included? Welcomed? Difficult?
Looking at this alone directly, at the repeating card(s) placement(s), can bring a clarifying perspective to the focus of the tenor of the identity of the reading for self or clients.

Yes, and yes, and as well the driver is also the one who challenges the engineers by pushing the car. With a great team, there is a tandem double-slingshot where both behind the scenes and those on stage work seamlessly as one . . . and may bark here and there at one another. LOL I know Ayrton Senna’s team would try and hold him back with, “You are doing things way beyond, that that car isn’t made for.” He’d bark, “Give yourself some credit. I haven’t broken you car . . . again . . .yet.” π They really worked together to get all the goody out of their experience.
And, yes and yes, we are on the same page from my perspective, especially with the “ignored . . . or did I?” Teamwork can be a beautifully double-eged sword used to carve and tune and tailor excellence . . . as Senna most always did.

I love how many of us came to community in our pentacles explorations. Not surprising, I guess, but still pleasing. Another thing with the nine and multiplication – the two digits of the answer add up to 9 – 18 (1+8), 27 (2+7) etc. I always loved that, too π

Pretty dang awesome! The Imagination Primer is like a 4-cheese Tarot white sauce of a picnic of a novel or Tarot play. Glad to see the cards literally speaking to you. They do in the book, though somehow all in the cards has a Mo Betta facet to it. π
OK… so there is a reason I have not fully read the book…
Basically I have a two pronged theory to approaching decks:
a. You don’t learn anything while you clutch the LWB for back up…
b. I’m looking for intelligent design – so my reasoning is… a deck is an intuitive tool… so… if the creator has done the job properly… it should hit the ground running straight out of the box…
So… w.r.t. that theory – well I slap a ‘ Vorsprung Durch Technik’ bumper sticker on your ass π
However…
for personal development work… yes – I have dipped into the owner’s manual… particularly to further my learning from the Treasure of the Stones readings. And well… let’s just say that I could wax lyrical ad infinitum … π xx

I was on Facebook for 10 days way back in 2006 before I deleted my account. I found it the most mindless and vacuous exercise in wasting time. For similar reasons, I never bothered with Twitter. I’m glad to see many people waking up: Internet marketing in general is not quite the magic potion it is painted to be.
I didn’t know you were interested in the work of Jaynes. I knew a fellow who was quite devoted to him. This fellow introduced me to tarot 11 years ago. I always called him “Magus Mine” since he considered himself a prototypical Magician.
I came to find Jaynes a bit too narrow in belief and overly fond of assumption. Similar to some tarot historians, you can only extrapolate so much, assume so much, before you are in the realm of projected theory. Perhaps we could say the same of most philosophers? But they sure are interesting to read.
I like the art and I like the spark of thought such things engender. Wouldn’t it be neat to have a tarot deck devoted to philosophers and people like Jaynes?

Oh, when I was on Facebook, I almost posted cat pics exclusively through the election. Love me some cats. I don’t really understand your “without training” part of your comment. Meaning, you’re a natural? Creds and authority can sometimes just be props, not necessarily necessary, so good for you!
In regards to Corbu, I’m glad he did what he did, and I have no revisionist personal history to suggest to historical friends. Mostly ’cause they’re dead, and minorly because he did what he did. He was simply horrible at undervaluing his paintings. Gallery owners would double and triple the prices, and they would sell. Plus, he designed stark white and simple architecture, except for his coup de tas of Ronchamps, and lived in luxury with opulent ornate things. When asked why, he would mostly respond, “Oh, that’s for my clients. I couldn’t stand to live in that barren kind of space.”
When I did architect Gerrit Rietveld on the 10 of Spades, he said much the same thing about his famous SchrΓΆder House. He lived in it for a time 25 years after he built it and found it awful to live in. But the lady who commissioned it loved it. Such is ART.
Without training = without a degree in architecture. In our society amateurism is a terrible sin, but if you look at history, many discoveries in science were made by amateurs. I guess they didn’t realize they couldn’t do it. I have a small deck called The Ocean Oracle, and when I look up the shells and who discovered them I find many of them were amateurs who just liked to scrounge around for a good shell. Same thing in botany, and on and on.
I did Le Corbusier (we were never familiar enough for me to call him Corbu) on the King of Spades and his Villa Savoye on the 8 of Spades–the spades are all Modern architecture in the Play Architecture playing cards that I am studying, Next up: De-Structuralism in the Clubs suit. Ooh-la-la.
Some folks would like to burn you at the stake for saying such things. To them you speak heresy…fluently! Me, I’ve had several good giggles, in between nodding with relieved approval.

I’ve no idea what a bicameral mind is unless the term refers to the two sides of the brain, but I was on Facebook for a few weeks some 4 years ago and I left soon enough. I found the whole thing not only creepy but mindboggingly vapid -or as JJ says, vacuous. The general level of discourse was pathetic, when not downright questionable. So glad to find out I’m not alone. I’ve neve bothered with Twitter either as it sonded like something for tweets/twats. Flickr, on the other hand, unfashionable as it seems to be, or have become, I still find OK. It’s been rather good for my self-confidence as a graphic artist and it’s -admitedly over- populated with some wonderful stuff that soothes the eyeballs and the mind (bicameral or otherwise).

I love Judgment. If you’re never called out on your shit, or vice versa, no forgiveness is really even necessary. :/ It’s also what prevents you from eating the poison berries. You mention the Queen of Swords and then name the Queen of Cups…. but the Queen of Swords is a really interesting mention that I wouldn’t have thought of! She’s been around the block, she’s in a position to move on. The Queen of Cups… I worry about co-dependency and chronic apologist victimhood for her… Dunno. Interesting. Cool deck, too! I hadn’t seen it before. Take care.
I bought a similar drafting template with squares, triangles, circles, ellipses and hexagons–ye olde general purpose metric template. Love the darn thing, use it for lots of stuff. There is something about templates….swoon.
I love the idea of astrology in history, and also alchemy, I just like reading about the history or the various experts and their lives. I have a couple of books on alchemy, particularly the artwork. I like the artwork of astrology too but have no patience or interest with the charting and such.
Which reminds me, I have a biography of Paracelsus by Philip Ball (an excellent author) called “The Devil’s Doctor: Paracelsus and the World of Renaissance Magic and Science” that I still haven’t read after several years, so I vow to read it. I don’t suppose you have read that?
And this is an idea that runs through your entire deck–one of the reasons it is different! I was quite surprised at the gentle way this meanders through the Minor Arcana. Surprised and rather heartened actually.
That adds a bright star in my day, JJ, to get a postcard so to speak like that back from the Mystereum Minors from their not-minimized mode of being. Thank You.

The 8 swords put me in mind of a Guard of Honour. The black line that cuts through the clouds echoes back to the messages of 6 of S and 7 of S but also whispers hints forwards to the 9 of S … Similarly with the shadow hand, that takes me back to the 6 and 7…
Thanks, Karen. These were my two prototypes as I was going into pre-production on my 2008 self-published edition. Based on the card manufacturer’s available card sizes that I ended up awarding the card production to, the box on the left (playing card size) was the one I made. All hail 7th grade Butterick flat pattern work and a Bernina + architecture with descriptive geometry. I printed the boxes on photo paper with my printer from the pattern I created and then cut, folded, and assembled them. Thanks for liking. I enjoyed the way they turned out. A little thin, but for an Indie deck at the time…

That’s very generous of you Jordan, but I am not a great fan of vampires. I do have Ian Daniel’s “Tarot of Vampyres” which I find kind of kitschy and charming, plus he wrote an excellent book, but vampires aren’t really my thing.
Reading your words, it occurs to me that the stealth aspect, the secrecy, represents a type of power and mastery that people long for in a world that can make them feel helpless and out of control. Perhaps that’s the appeal?
Darkness has always been fearful for people–probably a biological thing–so to have mastery over the fear of that would be appealing too I think. Better to master the hidden realms than be fearful of the night. Also, there is a component of sexual power to the vampire archetype, perhaps as a result of the omniscience of hidden secrets and conquered fear?
I find that Tarot can represent a similar appeal to certain people, as if it gives them power or some sort of leverage of being in-the-know.
All points great there, JJ. And, I’ll simply let Prescient Remembrance remain a mystery to you, except to say it’s not a story of biting and chasing and fear and screaming but of one man’s search for his lost love. I figured the Vamp world needed a human interest story, so it’s a metaphor for the power and grace…. ahhh, talking about it is not something an author should do.
Thanks for your comments. Tarot does have that appeal as well. Journey is as Journey does whether it’s a Fool’s journey, a Hero’s journey, that they are one and the same and/or neither. Every card an Oracle straight from a dark psychomanteum I say.

The older I get, the more I feel I don’t know anything about the world. It makes life interesting though to learn about new things and see what other people are doing and thinking.
Years ago I used to read HiC’s Tarotscopes. I am not a great believer in astrology (surprising no one I expect), but I like the idea of pairing it with tarot.
Well, I’m a Leo and consider the 8 of Pentacles one of my personal cards, so this sounds good. I think.
(Checks mirror for the fourth time in an hour, feels burning sensation….)
So, Jordan — You pulled the Queen of Swords for my Sun and the King for my BF’s. Thing is, we got in our first fight on the night of the lunar eclipse — of course! I’ve already broken out my mourning veil, which is fine, I am very Queen of Swords-y — but that we got paired Courts makes me hesitate. Care to take a…uhm.. stab? Haha. π
Surprise surprise getting into the first fight on the lunar eclipse. π Then, as well your paired Courts comingle though not necessarily need to mix… I would extend to you… taking a stab at it (good one) that one of you should poke the buttons on the phone and mix it up together understanding that there are two swords, and that that requires two scabbards. She’s the ultimate natural leader and he’s the ultimate natural communicator. Also, heat dulls blades, so chillax and take the high road… when he pushes, don’t push back to escalate, simply say “What can I do to make this work?” Then of course he’ll need to hear from you afterwards what HE can do from your perspective to make it work. Don’t turn up the heat unless the swords are sheathed. Not so no-one gets hurt… I just can’t STAND for you to dull a good blade the wrong way. π

Into writing short books are we? π I love that none of us are getting out of this alive! π There is a difference between the unknown, and “not knowing”, and there is a lot of that which occurs naturally in life.
BTW – It will be interesting to see how people go through this post and “pick paragraphs” for perusal and digestion. Things will be missed, or not seen in depth, IMHO, for those who do this.
Death and not-knowing to me is more like a six lane highway, with lots of hectic movement in all directions. I think I am looking at/feeling multiple universes here – different levels on the same timeline, as well as the past/future aspects of each timeline.
I do agree that our imagination is the basis or our survival system. I also agree t hat failure is a huge part of our learning experience. I feel that the evolving of the Mystereum Tarot into Tarot In The Land Of Mysteruem was/is a natural progression. Taking it out for a test drive, using it in some very important ways. Not so much a balancing act as evolving it, moving it forward.
BTW – IMHO, good stories do have a tendency to meander. π
Can’t say that I agree with you about channeling. I do get out of my own way to bring things through in a reading, in journey work and in visualisation. Go more intensely into the now is a completely different thing.
It is not unusual for you to be thinking more about death now that the Mystereum Tarot is a living being. It has come to completion, and you need to experience its death (in its current form), and move forward with the next phase.
Good questions to ponder!
To make it easier for people reading this post, I would suggest that they print it out. In that way, they can read it at their leisure, at will, in small chunks, and reference back to the first paragraphs easily. There is a lot of good stuff here!

I appreciate your point and disagreement on channelling a great deal, and think there are different experiences of it. Mine stems most probably from my Mercury and Neptune being 4 degrees from one another exalted way deep into Scorpio. . .a foot on both sides kinda thing where to me psychic contents are pretty much like looking at art in a museum. They have always been a very present and actually mundane and normal part of my creativity. Like one hand IS a muse, in the other a pencil so to speak. And, as an astrologer once told me, “Jordan, that’s normal to YOU! But, that is so NOT normal!” π Have a great Memorial Day / Decoration Day!

This is a very deep thought, the prescient painting. Whenever imagery repeats itself like this, there is a reason. In each of these time periods, something was kicked in that was/is connected tot he other time periods. IMHO, anyway. π
The energy moving into wand at this point in time is necessary. It as come to a point where is can now be used to activate other things in your life.

You are right on the money, gloriously with no need of humility, Bonnie! What has kicked in is an absolute celebration and reverence for my multiple so-close-to mountain experiences AND a dispensation with the residual hangers on of rationing and going without just to make it through the experience. Time to treat those like a dog swimming, and shake off, tail UP and trot away from them. I served myself well to live through those experiences. The memories served me well to express the power of life, of my life, the power of presence in experience. But, their directly present time has passed, and that is what my noticing of the pattern is indicating to me. . .that art talisman tokens as trailheads of my experience resurged forth graciously to simply step into view to marshall forces. Three, the number of the first shape, the triangle the smallest module of a potential structure. Three stand for me to flex my temples in a far-seeing smile knowing indomitable spirit, and now more feeling an Emperor step by step where I am realigning my pace and direction. . .step by step. . . realigning the whole system in a sungle step. . .step by step.
I thought I was through those experiences, and recently I began to feel a bit too dead-man’s eyes about them. . .like I was in the wrong gear with them. And, I now feel I anesthetized parts of me to get all of me through them. Perennials and gardening and Death and Master Gardener. . .I have been poking up my perennial nose in my garden it seems. Rise and Shine Me! π

Thanks for the shout-out! And you got it, bull’s-eye, the reason why I included the Balbi Page of Swords in the illustrations to that article, even though nowhere did I directly state why. There he stands on his dramatic red and black checkerboard, which is imposed on the gently rolling landscape with artificial precision. The figure he cuts is all graceful curves and flashing colors, and he seems to be dowsing with his sword on the chessboard grid. I have always loved this card for the way the “Pythagorean” curves and colors contrast with the “Aristotelian” flooring. We need the one to set off the other.
This principle is actually operative right through to our inner senses. I’ve learned the hard way that when a person’s inner gyroscope is weak (inner-ear issues), the eyes overwork, trying to make up for that by seizing onto the verticals and horizontals of the landscape to steady one’s balance. My astigmatic self used to think “I don’t like all these 90-degree angles that civilization produces everywhere.” It’s true — from our architecture through car and clothing design to the standard shapes of our reading and computing surfaces, so much in our culture is cubic, far beyond the demands of efficiency or convention. But now I understand — the curves and colors of the Pythagorean world define beauty for the high-performing sensory net, but the nervous system defaults back to black-and-white Aristotelian logic when depth perception fails. Just so in society — if we cannot produce leadership of and by Philosophers, then we have to default back to being a nation of laws.
Keep it coming! I believe that the future of Tarot is it’s deep dark past. The more work we do “cleaning out the closets” so to speak, the more treasures we’ll unearth about this wonder-tool we all love so much.

Bull’s–eye is acceptable. ;-D I love the literal visual of your astigmatism example. My similar vein of experience comes from having 20:20 vision in my weak eye and 20:15 vision in the other. And, fluidity of clear sight in motion whether eyes open or closed, off-the-cuff or planned. . .but, i remember back, decades ago when for years I trained in the martial arts. Remembering back to the first month or two, the first days, and forms. . .step 1, 2, DANGIT what’s 3?! And, I smile as like water dripping on a rock, over and over across time the 1, 2, 3 was beautifully lost in the effortlessnes of motion like dominoes set up and staccatto-clicking at speed moving through their falling down. Fractals in motion, always perceiving the angles of curves, the generative formulas and lines constructing ellipses, or a simple flowing curve splined in tangent to flow into the next line, curve, square, shape, or simply its next place. As I read I was not looking for direct expressions of that Ace of Swords dowsing on the checkerboard, but was feeling its identity flow through the entirety of your article. . .where what was left unsaid was as generative as what you did say. Feels to me to be the natural way, though in Philo classes and such the dead-end of one or the other often boringly takes precedence, and many do not take that whole world of an Aristotelian expression and a Pythagorean one to “1, 2, DANGIT what’s 3?!” and take their thoughts creatively and lifefully forward from the forms of basic beginnings. . .like The Hermit sensing, about to see his own footsteps, his own footsteps as he completes a circle in a familiar place about to be experienced differently. . .presaging, prefiguring The Wheel of what is then “1, 2, 3, DANGIT”. Over and over through life, and it rarely becomes boring. And, more so the continual mastery, Aristotelian-Pythagorean antinomy in each motion, leads to further discovery.

Great to talk to another who gets it, celebrates that, and at one and the same time simply finds it very much a natural mode of being in the world. Interesting that you picked up on my statement. I was just thinking out loud, because I am not sure jus “how” disruptive thislunar eclipse is going to be, but I do have a feeling that quite a shake up is in order. Eclipses of all kinds make us step back and look at things, and a total eclipse in the sign of Sagittarius (the wanderer witht he very questioning mind) begs to bepaid attention to. Can we thank the heavens that the Rapture was not “scheduled’ for this time period?!!
I feel that in looking at the role the “Mystereum Tarot” played/is playing in your life, it is a compendium of your experiences, while at the same time “being” a learning experience. Cool that you brought the Empress into the mix, because while the eclipse rides on the tails of the Sun and the Moon, we are seeing/experiencing it fromt he perspective of soeone on the Earth. The World, of course, is actually where all of this happens. (We won’t get into parallel worlds for now!)
Too bad that we won’t see the eclipse here in the U.S.!
I like t he Pallas Athena reference. When I first entered the service, and t he Women’s Army Corp was separate from the men’s army (this changed while I was in basic training), Pallas Athena was our “representative”, or symbol. Great poem!
Dark into dark is an interesting concept. Being in the dark, then letting go and going that much deeper into the dark.

A big ole simplicity towards complexity I have, that I guess I overlooked for decades until it unfolded to reveal itself. . .and I fully trust in it doing so when it did and not a moment before. . .is that I have always been able to sight-read any deck put in my hands or on the screen. . .and as I minded my temples flexing last time I looked at a Marseilles deck. . .your blog post reminded me of that. Reminded me of my own decptive simplicity towards myself and Tarot and basically most everything. . .where I can almost miss my own valuable statements and actions and miss capitalizing on them for myself and to further provide a service to others. Great post, Jordan. As someone with 3 planets + Chiron in Pisces in the 11th house and my north node in the 12th house, I understand all too well this swimming Neptunian boundarylessness… I like the image of the sponge, it works for me. I find that I draw on the Jupiterian side of me to counterbalance the excess of Neptune: wisdom, learning, gravitas, and the Martial to help with the boundaries and some sparks of energy. But I also see those Neptunian elements as useful – I get instant feedback from a querent, I ‘know’ if and how what I’m saying is touching them, so I can adapt, repeat, or move on.

I hear you about different perspectives, Jordan. Each card has many voices. Repeating cards is something I’m thinking about a lot lately. In the solar return reading I did for myself on my birthday earlier in January, Temperance showed up three times! “How is this even possible?” I hear you asking. I did a 12 Houses spread and used three cards from three different decks to give a fuller picture of the energy of each house. In my reading, the Temperance card first shows up in the central theme position in the 1st House. In the 3rd House it shows up as the ‘shadow’ and in the 4th House it shows up in the spiritual guidance position. Talk about food for thought! This is one of the reasons I love doing multiple deck readings – Allowing for repetition this way provides the Universe to ‘flag’ development themes and makes dig deeper for meaning.

~ Describe the movement of the card into and through different areas of your life?
~ Do the cards live in that area for now? Do they cycle around? . . . like the moon and sun to the earth?
~ How are the cards or card included? Welcomed? Difficult?
Looking at this alone directly, at the repeating card(s) placement(s), can bring a clarifying perspective to the focus of the tenor of the identity of the reading for self or clients.
. . . enough prepositions just there. Felt like I was Family-Tree diagramming the sentence . . . microscoping closer and closer . . . EverReady Bunny sentence? Ode to Ellipses Expressed. π

Yes, and yes, and as well the driver is also the one who challenges the engineers by pushing the car. With a great team, there is a tandem double-slingshot where both behind the scenes and those on stage work seamlessly as one . . . and may bark here and there at one another. LOL I know Ayrton Senna’s team would try and hold him back with, “You are doing things way beyond, that that car isn’t made for.” He’d bark, “Give yourself some credit. I haven’t broken you car . . . again . . .yet.” π They really worked together to get all the goody out of their experience.

Hi Jordan~I wasn’t sure how to respond-so I pulled three cards from my Mary-El deck and this is what I got: Page of Wands, 3 of disks, Ace of Wands.
I asked: “How do I dance with an idea? Fundamentally or Patriotically?
My sentence: Strength of heart, grounded with action, will be creatively expressed.
Now, I’m not sure if this expresses fundamentalism or patriotism, but I did enjoy using key words to make a sentence.

Fascinating seeing how you put this technique into effect. It was interesting, too, when you said to actually put a card distance between the cards, I did so in my mind, and saw an actual card to bridge the gap – a different mental way to draw cards π

OK… so there is a reason I have not fully read the book…
Basically I have a two pronged theory to approaching decks:
a. You don’t learn anything while you clutch the LWB for back up…
b. I’m looking for intelligent design – so my reasoning is… a deck is an intuitive tool… so… if the creator has done the job properly… it should hit the ground running straight out of the box…
So… w.r.t. that theory – well I slap a ‘ Vorsprung Durch Technik’ bumper sticker on your ass π
However…
for personal development work… yes – I have dipped into the owner’s manual… particularly to further my learning from the Treasure of the Stones readings. And well… let’s just say that I could wax lyrical ad infinitum … π xx

I was on Facebook for 10 days way back in 2006 before I deleted my account. I found it the most mindless and vacuous exercise in wasting time. For similar reasons, I never bothered with Twitter. I’m glad to see many people waking up: Internet marketing in general is not quite the magic potion it is painted to be.
I didn’t know you were interested in the work of Jaynes. I knew a fellow who was quite devoted to him. This fellow introduced me to tarot 11 years ago. I always called him “Magus Mine” since he considered himself a prototypical Magician.
I came to find Jaynes a bit too narrow in belief and overly fond of assumption. Similar to some tarot historians, you can only extrapolate so much, assume so much, before you are in the realm of projected theory. Perhaps we could say the same of most philosophers? But they sure are interesting to read.

Oh, when I was on Facebook, I almost posted cat pics exclusively through the election. Love me some cats. I don’t really understand your “without training” part of your comment. Meaning, you’re a natural? Creds and authority can sometimes just be props, not necessarily necessary, so good for you!
In regards to Corbu, I’m glad he did what he did, and I have no revisionist personal history to suggest to historical friends. Mostly ’cause they’re dead, and minorly because he did what he did. He was simply horrible at undervaluing his paintings. Gallery owners would double and triple the prices, and they would sell. Plus, he designed stark white and simple architecture, except for his coup de tas of Ronchamps, and lived in luxury with opulent ornate things. When asked why, he would mostly respond, “Oh, that’s for my clients. I couldn’t stand to live in that barren kind of space.”

When I did architect Gerrit Rietveld on the 10 of Spades, he said much the same thing about his famous SchrΓΆder House. He lived in it for a time 25 years after he built it and found it awful to live in. But the lady who commissioned it loved it. Such is ART.
Without training = without a degree in architecture. In our society amateurism is a terrible sin, but if you look at history, many discoveries in science were made by amateurs. I guess they didn’t realize they couldn’t do it. I have a small deck called The Ocean Oracle, and when I look up the shells and who discovered them I find many of them were amateurs who just liked to scrounge around for a good shell. Same thing in botany, and on and on.
I did Le Corbusier (we were never familiar enough for me to call him Corbu) on the King of Spades and his Villa Savoye on the 8 of Spades–the spades are all Modern architecture in the Play Architecture playing cards that I am studying, Next up: De-Structuralism in the Clubs suit. Ooh-la-la.

I’ve no idea what a bicameral mind is unless the term refers to the two sides of the brain, but I was on Facebook for a few weeks some 4 years ago and I left soon enough. I found the whole thing not only creepy but mindboggingly vapid -or as JJ says, vacuous. The general level of discourse was pathetic, when not downright questionable. So glad to find out I’m not alone. I’ve neve bothered with Twitter either as it sonded like something for tweets/twats. Flickr, on the other hand, unfashionable as it seems to be, or have become, I still find OK. It’s been rather good for my self-confidence as a graphic artist and it’s -admitedly over- populated with some wonderful stuff that soothes the eyeballs and the mind (bicameral or otherwise).

I love Judgment. If you’re never called out on your shit, or vice versa, no forgiveness is really even necessary. :/ It’s also what prevents you from eating the poison berries. You mention the Queen of Swords and then name the Queen of Cups…. but the Queen of Swords is a really interesting mention that I wouldn’t have thought of! She’s been around the block, she’s in a position to move on. The Queen of Cups… I worry about co-dependency and chronic apologist victimhood for her… Dunno. Interesting. Cool deck, too! I bought a similar drafting template with squares, triangles, circles, ellipses and hexagons–ye olde general purpose metric template. Love the darn thing, use it for lots of stuff. There is something about templates….swoon.
I love the idea of astrology in history, and also alchemy, I just like reading about the history or the various experts and their lives. I have a couple of books on alchemy, particularly the artwork. I like the artwork of astrology too but have no patience or interest with the charting and such.
Which reminds me, I have a biography of Paracelsus by Philip Ball (an excellent author) called “The Devil’s Doctor: Paracelsus and the World of Renaissance Magic and Science” that I still haven’t read after several years, so I vow to read it. I don’t suppose you have read that?

The 8 swords put me in mind of a Guard of Honour. The black line that cuts through the clouds echoes back to the messages of 6 of S and 7 of S but also whispers hints forwards to the 9 of S … Similarly with the shadow hand, that takes me back to the 6 and 7…

Thanks, Karen. These were my two prototypes as I was going into pre-production on my 2008 self-published edition. Based on the card manufacturer’s available card sizes that I ended up awarding the card production to, the box on the left (playing card size) was the one I made. All hail 7th grade Butterick flat pattern work and a Bernina + architecture with descriptive geometry. I printed the boxes on photo paper with my printer from the pattern I created and then cut, folded, and assembled them. Thanks for liking. I enjoyed the way they turned out. A little thin, but for an Indie deck at the time…

That’s very generous of you Jordan, but I am not a great fan of vampires. I do have Ian Daniel’s “Tarot of Vampyres” which I find kind of kitschy and charming, plus he wrote an excellent book, but vampires aren’t really my thing.
Reading your words, it occurs to me that the stealth aspect, the secrecy, represents a type of power and mastery that people long for in a world that can make them feel helpless and out of control. Perhaps that’s the appeal?
Darkness has always been fearful for people–probably a biological thing–so to have mastery over the fear of that would be appealing too I think. Better to master the hidden realms than be fearful of the night. Also, there is a component of sexual power to the vampire archetype, perhaps as a result of the omniscience of hidden secrets and conquered fear?
I find that Tarot can represent a similar appeal to certain people, as if it gives them power or some sort of leverage of being in-the-know.

And, I’ll simply let Prescient Remembrance remain a mystery to you, except to say it’s not a story of biting and chasing and fear and screaming but of one man’s search for his lost love. I figured the Vamp world needed a human interest story, so it’s a metaphor for the power and grace…. ahhh, talking about it is not something an author should do.
Thanks for your comments. Tarot does have that appeal as well. Journey is as Journey does whether it’s a Fool’s journey, a Hero’s journey, that they are one and the same and/or neither. Every card an Oracle straight from a dark psychomanteum I say.

Years ago I used to read HiC’s Tarotscopes. I am not a great believer in astrology (surprising no one I expect), but I like the idea of pairing it with tarot.
Well, I’m a Leo and consider the 8 of Pentacles one of my personal cards, so this sounds good. I think.

I’ve already broken out my mourning veil, which is fine, I am very Queen of Swords-y — but that we got paired Courts makes me hesitate. Care to take a…uhm.. stab? Haha. π

Surprise surprise getting into the first fight on the lunar eclipse. π Then, as well your paired Courts comingle though not necessarily need to mix… I would extend to you… taking a stab at it (good one) that one of you should poke the buttons on the phone and mix it up together understanding that there are two swords, and that that requires two scabbards. She’s the ultimate natural leader and he’s the ultimate natural communicator. Also, heat dulls blades, so chillax and take the high road… when he pushes, don’t push back to escalate, simply say “What can I do to make this work?” Then of course he’ll need to hear from you afterwards what HE can do from your perspective to make it work. Don’t turn up the heat unless the swords are sheathed. Not so no-one gets hurt… I just can’t STAND for you to dull a good blade the wrong way. π
That’s my 2 cents.
